2020-21 Speaker Session Info

Speaker 1: Lovely Umayam, Founder, Creative Producer-Bombshelltoe

Lovely Umayam is the founder of Bombshelltoe Policy x Arts Collective, an organization that fosters relationships between policy experts, scientists, historians, and artists to explore nuclear arms control, nonproliferation, and disarmament issues. Lovely has worked in the nuclear policy field for more than 10 years, including experience in academia (researching Chinese nuclear policy); government (U.S. Department of Energy); and non-profit think tanks (Stimson Center). She believes in the interweaving of rigorous policy research and visual arts/creative writing to make nuclear policy more relevant to young people today. Lovely is a first-generation immigrant from the Philippines and is the first in her family to go to college. She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA.

During her presentation, Lovely will share her experience entering the nuclear policy field (how she got involved and found intern/work opportunities), her commitment to bringing diverse perspectives in the field, and her use of arts/culture to expand interest in these issues. She will also briefly speak about her most recent creative collaborations under Bombshelltoe: "Illuminating Radioactivity" and "Atomic Sublime"
